    Elections 2025: voting open in Elected Trustee ballot

    Voting is now open in the ballot to choose an Elected Trustee to join our Board of Trustees and play a key role in shaping the future of the British Psychological Society (BPS). Following the recent call for nominations for this year's BPS elections, six candidates have put themselves forward for the Elected Trustee role. Each BPS member will have one vote only, and voting will close at noon on 16 July 2025.

This course includes insights from professionals who have applied their psychological knowledge across various contexts, including learning development in higher education, online teaching, private practice, and human-centred design.   The presentations cover topics like integrating private practice with teaching, applying core health psychology competencies to online education, and the rise of teaching-focused academic roles. The module also offers practical guidance for aspiring psychologists, particularly those interested in teaching, research, and professional development within academia.  Once you have watched the presentations, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Is this course right for me? This course is suitable for participants of all ages and at all stages of their career. It’s most suitable for;  Pre-university and university students interested in teaching, academia, or a career in psychology.   Those seeking some practical guidance on mentorship, networking, publishing, and professional development in academia.   Anyone looking to understand the various academic roles in psychology, including teaching and research-focused positions, along with the necessary qualifications and skills.   These presentations were delivered live in November 2024 and are available in English only.   This course includes a total of 7 presentations.  Presenters Lyndsey Hayes  Lyndsey Hayes is a Chartered Psychologist and has been teaching Psychology to secondary and further education students since 2002. She is also a former A-Level and GCSE Psychology Examiner. In addition to her teaching career, Lyndsey is a member of the Association for the Teaching of Psychology (ATP) committee and represents the ATP on the British Psychological Society's (BPS) London and Home Counties membership branch and the Division of Academics, Researchers and Teachers in Psychology Committee. In July 2024, she was also appointed as the new Chair of the BPS Standing Committee on psychology Education in Schools and Colleges. British Psychological Society Division of Academics, Researchers and Teachers.  Dr Steve Briggs  Dr Steve Briggs leads the Academy for Learning and Teaching Excellence at the University of Bedfordshire. The Academy is responsible for curriculum enhancement, academic development, student learning development, digital learning and teaching and learning evaluation. Steve was previously the Co-Chair of the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE) where he led national work related to professional recognition and networking events. He is currently a committee member of the Association for National Teaching Fellows (ANTF) and contributing to the ‘In it Together’ project. Steve is a Chartered Psychologist, National Teaching Fellow (2020) and PFHEA.  Dr Sarah Thurgood  Dr Sarah Thurgood is a Programme Director working for the University of Liverpool Online - Kaplan Open Learning. She completed the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology at Staffordshire University. She has a wealth of experience in teaching psychology online. She is a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist with the Bristish Psychological Society and registered as a Health Psychologist with the HCPC. Sarah is also Registered Supervisior for the BPS Qualification in Health Psychology.  Dr Emma McDonald CPsychol  Dr Emma McDonald (Chartered Psychologist) is a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan and the MSc Psychology in Education programme leader. In addition, Emma is an external examiner for Oxford Brooks University and the University of Buckingham. Emma also works closely with the British Psychological Society. Prior to Cardiff Met, Emma held teaching posts in psychology at Birmingham City University, Oxford Brooks University, Open University, University of Plymouth and Cardiff University. Emma completed her PhD in Memory and Dyslexia at the School of Psychology at Cardiff University. Emma's first degree was BSc (Hons) in Psychology at the University of Plymouth.  Dr Lucy Poxon  Dr Lucy Poxon qualified as a Counselling Psychologist over 10 years ago and is currently a lecturer and research supervisor on the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at University of East London (UEL). Alongside this, she offers short and long term therapy to adults in a private practice. While Lucy specialises in working with grief and bereavement, she has experience working with clients presenting with anxiety, panic attacks, work-related stress, childhood and domestic abuse, depression, chronic pain, relationship issues, gender dysphoria, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) across a wide range of services including the NHS, university, private and charity providers.  Rachel A.Wood  Rachel is an experienced leader and strategist in Human Centred Design and is passionate about embedding Psychology and Behavioural Science in both her practice and PhD Research (with the Open University Design Group). She is proud to have been a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society for over a decade. Rachel has a career spanning over 30 years of experience in design, development and delivery of public services, and is passionate about transforming lives and social value.  Dr Katy Burgess  Dr Katy Burgess’s career to date has focused on understanding how we learn and remember information, and how we can apply this knowledge in clinical and educational settings. Her interest in this area was sparked by her BSc and PhD in Psychology. After Katy’s PhD, she became interested in the clinical applications of learning and worked in a brain-injury rehabilitation setting. Dr Katy Burgess then returned to academia and has been working in teaching-focused positions for the past decade. Her current role involves embedding cognitive research findings into our teaching to ensure all students are supported in their learning journey.
