Sleep disturbances in many people living with symptoms of chronic pain are common and exacerbate the challenges of activities of daily living, with research identifying around 75% of people living with chronic pain also having associated clinical levels of sleep disturbance (Sun et al., 2021). A knowledge of how to best manage sleep problems in those living with chronic pain is important for psychologists and allied health professionals in order to enhance their practice and optimise their treatment outcomes.

Learning outcomes 

By the end of this two-hour webinar, participants will:   

  • Understand and be able to explain the science of sleep and how different sleep stages are relevant to the experience of sleep in people living with chronic pain 
  • Be able to explain some insomnias and parasomnias which are commonly seen in individuals living with chronic pain  
  • Be able to explain different treatment approaches for such clients and understand when they may be most appropriate to use  
  • Be better equipped to support others experiencing chronic pain  
  • Be able of and able to apply some useful tools to support individuals experiencing chronic pain in their practice

This webinar is suitable for health and social care professionals. It is appropriate for all career levels, and is suitable for doctors, nurses, OTs, PTs, social workers, clinical psychologists, neuro psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, speech and language therapists, care managers and case managers. No pre-requisites are needed.

 

Webinar Presenter

Dr Lee conducted a PhD in Sleep Psychology at Loughborough University's internationally renowned Sleep Research Centre examining sleep and associated quality of life in vulnerable, clinical groups.  Since then, he has held academic posts at Bradford and Newcastle Universities, lecturing in Psycho-behavioural Treatments for Insomnia and holds a certificate in higher education practice.   

He is trained in the delivery of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi) and Good Clinical Practice. He has delivered training and teaching workshops to a range of healthcare professionals and delivered training in this field for the BPS for a number of years. 

He is a member of the British Sleep Society and the World Association of Sleep Medicine, a Member and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist, and a Chartered Scientist.  Findings from his own research have been published in international, peer-reviewed journals.  

He is Author of the acclaimed “Teaching the World to Sleep,” 2nd Edition, Routledge, London 2023, (1st Edition published in 2016)
