Resilience: Psychosocial competencies (1 October 2025)

We are facing a mental (ill) health crisis – but unfortunately the focus when it comes to support is biased towards treatment only, rather than prevention. Even then, without having had the opportunity to learn the skills needed, coming to them especially at the point of crisis can feel overwhelming.  As such, many clients drop out of therapy, and others find other, more damaging ways to regulate.
In contrast, where resilience, emotional fortitude and regulation, self-value and self-compassion is taught from the bottom up, parents and children recognise a greater sense of fulfilment, happiness and even problem solving.
I hope that delegates will feel that they know themselves better and have tools to reflect more.  I also hope they feel less overwhelmed should they sense they are not on “the right path” and know how to re-align.
I hope they feel empowered and motivated – and know they have an array of tools they can use themselves or with clients.

We need to change the narrative of what is important…but it is not easy to do…so one way is to start within ourselves. If we can learn to build those skills within ourselves, we will be able to identify methods to teach them to our clients or students.  If we practice those skills, we will also role model them from which clients and students also benefit.  Most importantly, these are the skills that are likely to keep us feeling fulfilled.

The problem I am aimed at solving is that psychology recommendations are not just about “making things better”/”bringing things back to normal/typical”, but actually can be applied – like the person who does physical exercise because they like it and it is preventative of ill health; everyday – it can help prevent (or at least buffer) stress, it can help us get through change, and be able to adapt, it can set the foundations for achieving anything we wish – and it can also empower us when we are going through tough times (eg. when we might have professional intervention).

I want psychological tools – or rather the practical exercises aimed at developing mental and emotional awareness strength – to be easy to commit to using daily, so that we constantly top up our mental and emotional energy, rather than having to scrabble around for them when we are really REALLY not ok! The activities and exercises are there to help us become more self aware, to check in with ourselves every now and then – so that we can know early (and respond early) if we recognise things aren’t “feeling right”, and also so that we can be the best us for when we are helping or supporting others!

My teaching/learning is aiming to burst the myths that “self care is selfish” AND also remind ourselves that our wellbeing can be enhanced and enriched by so many things already under our control…but we may just need a little guidance. Of course we cannot prevent everything, but we can make life not just more manageable (no matter what), but also get so much more joy out of everything we do.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:
  • Delegates will leave with a number of different practical exercises designed to allow them to reflect on and develop the following areas: Authenticity; Building health relationships and planning and taking steps towards your "ideal life".
  • Delegates will identify the roles and barriers that have been holding them back, and reframe them both recognising the positive traits that have come from them, as well as feeling able to let go of whatever no longer serves.
  • Delegates will be able to speak compassionately to themselves, and develop ways to express their authentic needs through learning from others, and utilising the tools in the webinar.
  • Delegates have a safe space and guidance through exercises to explore areas of personal development which may not be open to them in normal supervisions, or that they may not normally “find time” to do.

Is this course right for me?

This webinar is for ANYONE who wants to work on their own personal development, or perhaps is looking for practical ways to apply psychological theory to their own work/for their own clients. It might be that those at the earlier stages in their career will find greater benefit in such exploration now, and those with a desire to develop personally will take more from it. EVERYONE can benefit – learning is a “pick and mix” – I put the knowledge out there, it is up to you to use what works best for you.
