This webinar will outline key points to consider when preparing for, planning and conducting a mental capacity assessment relating to decisions about property and financial affairs. It will explore how changes in financial management, including the increased use of online and mobile banking and digital security, impact assessment and practice. The webinar will also consider evolving case law, clinical implications and changes to practice, while providing an opportunity to bring BPS guidance and resources to life through practical discussion and examples.

This course is aimed at psychologists who routinely conduct mental capacity assessments. It is suitable for early to mid-career psychologists and those seeking a refresher, with a focus on keeping knowledge and practice up to date. 

What will I learn?

By the end of the webinar, participants will:

  • Feel more confident and competent in preparing for, planning and conducting mental capacity assessments relating to property and financial affairs.
  • Understand key considerations arising from changes in how finances are managed, including online and mobile banking and digital security.
  • Be aware of relevant developments in case law and their clinical implications for practice.
  • Be able to apply current guidance and best practice to their own professional practice.

Who is the presenter?

Dr Louise Warren

Dr Warren will be presenting this course. Dr Warren has extensive experience in mental capacity assessment and training. She has delivered training at the Salomons Institute for Applied Psychology (2020–present) as an Associate Teacher on the Postgraduate Diploma of Clinical Neuropsychology (Adult), including teaching on mental capacity, and has delivered mental capacity training to an NHS Trust as an external provider.

Dr Warren co-facilitated the BPS webinar ‘What makes a good capacity assessment?’ in September 2025. She is currently Chair of the Mental Capacity Advisory Group and has been involved in developing Best Practice Guidance to support psychologists’ competence and confidence in conducting mental capacity assessments. She regularly conducts mental capacity assessments as a treating clinician, expert witness and for the Court of Protection.
