Supervision in different contexts: Internal vs external
An awareness of context is an important consideration for any supervisor. Whether you are providing supervision within your organisation or on an external basis, or a combination of the two, having an awareness of the differences in context and the impact of these will help you to develop and maintain an effective supervisory alliance.
This course is designed to provide you with the key skills and knowledge to understand the particular advantages and challenges that can arise from supervising in-house compared with an external or self-employed supervisor, and help you to make the most of opportunities and anticipate and manage challenges.
What will I learn?
- identify whether you offer mainly external or internal supervision, including whether internal supervision is direct or at arm’s length.
- recognise the importance of taking a systemic perspective to grasp the implications of external and internal supervision.
- identify the main pros and cons of external and internal supervision, as they apply to both the supervisor and the supervisee.
- identify and mitigate the challenges that can arise for an external or internal supervisor, in order to promote a positive and productive supervisory alliance.
- make the most of the advantages of being an external or internal supervisor.
- maintain high standards of ethical practice that considers whether the context is external or internal supervision.
