This is the first module of the BPS Essential knowledge for the expert witness programme and explores the roles and responsibilities of an Expert Witness. What will I learn?

The learning outcomes for this course are to;
  • Understand and be able to explain the importance of maintaining independence as an expert witness
  • Understand and be able to explain the different phases of the expert witness duties; the report, the experts meeting, oral evidence
  • Be aware of and able to explain the Cresswell Principles of expert evidence
  • Understand the importance of being familiar with the court rules (Civil Procedure part 35, Family Proceedings part 25. Criminal Procedure part 19, Court of Protection part 49)
  • Be aware of ethical and practice issues often faced by a psychologist acting as an expert witness

 

What is the course structure? 

This is an online course designed to complete in your own time. We expect it to take approximately 90 minutes to complete. Please allow time to replay sections of the video as necessary and to pause to make notes along the way. 
 
This course consists of a film presented by the course author, with some questions incorporated to check your understanding and consolidate your knowledge. 

Once enrolled, you have six months to complete the course.

Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate of completion.

This course is available in English only. 

 

Is this course right for me? 

The course is intended for HCPC registered practitioner psychologists or those working towards the completion of their accredited training. It is particularly suitable for those considering embarking on practice as an expert witness.

Alternatively, you may wish to consider enrolling for our full Essential knowledge for the expert witness programme.
