A note on language

There are a range of different ways to describe of describing autistic people and the debate about which language is most appropriate is ongoing. Some prefer to use ‘person first’ language (i.e. adults with autism) whilst others prefer ‘identity first’ language (i.e. autistic adults).

For this course the authors have used a combination of different language. It is always best to ask the individual you are speaking to or working with what language they prefer.

About the authors

These BPS courses have been developed in collaboration with autism expertise from Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, in collaboration with a number of experts by experience peer mentors.
