This course has been designed to support you when working in a psychological role with autistic adults. It covers psychological assessment, formulations, and how to use psychological theory to most effectively support autistic people. It will also help you to consider how to adapt your practice when working with autistic adults.

After taking this course you should be able to identify autistic people, recognise when to refer for a specialist autism assessment, and understand what an autism assessment involves. However, it is not expected that you could undertake an assessment and diagnosis of autism after taking this course, as this requires specialist training and diagnostic tools.

What will I learn?

The learning outcomes for this course are:

  1. to understand the aims of the Autism Strategy and identify how the autism strategy has been implemented in their area of work.
  2. to understand how the mental health of autistic people may be impacted, and why this may be.
  3. to understand and have practiced approaches to identify, assess, diagnose and use theory to treat psychological and mental health conditions in autistic adults.
  4. to be more confident in supporting and treating psychological and mental health problems in autistic adults.

A note on language

There are a range of different ways to describe of describing autistic people and the debate about which language is most appropriate is ongoing. Some prefer to use ‘person first’ language (i.e. adults with autism) whilst others prefer ‘identity first’ language (i.e. autistic adults).

For this course the authors have used a combination of different language. It is always best to ask the individual you are speaking to or working with what language they prefer.
